Pioneering the Science of Libraries

An early pioneer of multimedia use, Professor Ruby Ethel Cundiff dramatically redefined the field of library science throughout her nearly 50-year career.

With a masters degree in library science from Columbia University in 1932, on top of many earlier degrees, Ruby Ethel Cundiff changed the field of #librarianship through her dedicated work from 1910 to the mid 1950s.

As a library director and a teacher in the discipline, Cundiff wrote groundbreaking work on the administration and organization of libraries, in addition to advocating for the value of libraries as educational tools for students in elementary through high school. Her approach was a holistic one, involving close communication and cooperation between teachers and librarians.

Cundiff’s many books and teaching methods were tremendous contributions to #libraryscience and used extensively throughout university programs. Her work in building reference collections and employing a wide range of media – from posters and pamphlets to film – as teaching tools became the standard throughout the field.

While at the Peabody College for Teachers, she was responsible for producing the excellent #PeabodyVisualAids and Peabody Posters of the 1930s and 40s that were used in libraries across the country.

Not only are the iconic posters great examples of typography and design of the period, but they are also early landmarks in the art of #infographic #design.
