As we enter month 10 of this pandemic – and anxiously await the vaccine – winter will be upon us soon. Getting outside for air and exercise will require creative thinking.
It can be difficult to stay sane and stay engaged as wave three of covid sweeps over the country. But being stuck in the city (probably any city) doesn’t mean confinement. There are many outside places to go and enjoy. Layer up if you’re in colder climates. If you’re in warmer locations, there’s no excuse not to get outside. A brisk walk or even a nice mosey clears the mind and lifts the spirits.
In the New York City area, I head to these outdoor spots as a balm for the soul.
The Highline: There’s some good art on display amid the beautiful gardens and always interesting new architecture surrounding the walkway. A great winter walk. The above image is part of the current exhibition by artist Lara Schnitger, called Sister of the Road.
Manhattan Waterfront Greenway: It’s possible to walk/bike/run around almost the entirety of the Manhattan Island waterfront – from down at the Battery to way up north in Inwood. If you tire, there are many ferry landings around to get you home, or ferry to a different path.
Brooklyn Bridge Park: Brooklyn’s northwestern waterfront has never looked better. Explore 85 acres with tons of activities and attractions, amid lots of nooks and crannies. An easy walk from downtown Manhattan via the Brooklyn or Manhattan Bridges. The current exhibit from the Public Art Fund is Reverberation by sculptor Davina Semo. These interactive, large-scale bells each have a name and a unique tone, and are designed to be rung.
Fort Greene Park: Lovely, historic park situated in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood, serving the community and filled with history. Great playgrounds within for the kids.
What are your go-to places for winter walks?
